Opportunities on the Caribbean coast and in the riverside region of the Lower Amazon

On November 25th, 2022, 1-2 PM UTC ( 8-9 AM Colombia time), the Networking Friday on Climate Change: Opportunities on the Caribbean coast and in the riverside region of the Lower Amazon, will have presentations from Faisal Bernal Higuit (UNICOSTA) on Food security and climate change in La Guajira, Colombia, and David McGrath (UFOPA) on Ribeirinho strategies for adjusting to climate change on the Amazon floodplain.

Faisal Bernal Higuit

Unicosta – Colombia

Director of the Guajira Aquaponics project. With experience in aquaculture projects and water treatment. Chemical Engineer from the Universidad del Atlántico. Specialist in Environmental Analysis and Management, Specialist in Pedagogical Studies, Master in Civil Engineering, doctoral student in Information and Communication Technologies at the Universidad de la Costa. He published the books “Artificial Wetlands and their application in the regional context” and “Experiences of environmental diagnosis in the framework of Cleaner Production”

Food security and climate change in La Guajira, Colombia

The presenter will share the technological and social experiences of applying sustainable solutions for food security in different contexts of the Guajira region, pointing to solutions within the framework of climate change.

David McGrath

UFOPA – Brasil

David McGrath is a geographer who has worked primarily on Amazon fisheries and community-based fisheries management policy. More generally he has worked on conservation and development policy issues in the Amazon basin. Dr. McGrath received his PhD from the Geography Department of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his M.A. from the Department of Geography and Regional Development of the University of Arizona. He is a professor in the Graduate Program Society, Nature and Development(PPGSND) of the Federal University of Western Pará (PPGSND) and Senior Researcher at the Earth Innovation Institute, based in San Francisco, CA.
