Infrastructure for Solar Activity Monitoring in the Azores Archipelago: e-CALLISTO Extension

Solar AZ is a project, dedicated to monitoring solar radio emissions and establishing a new solar observation centre in the Azores archipelago, at the heart of the Atlantic Ocean.

With instruments installed on the islands of Santa Maria and Flores, Solar-Az leverages the Azores’ unique geographical position to provide continuous monitoring of solar radio activity as part of the international e-CALLISTO network, which is a global infrastructure for tracking solar radio bursts and supporting space weather research.

Why the Azores?
Located between Europe, Africa, and the Americas, the Azores occupy a strategically important position in the North Atlantic. This location enables Solar -Az to cover a region that is currently underrepresented in global solar monitoring, improving the temporal and geographical continuity of solar radio data. By strengthening observational coverage across the Atlantic sector, the project enhances the robustness and resilience of international space weather monitoring systems.

Our Mission
The mission is to observe the Sun from a uniquely positioned Atlantic vantage point, contributing to global solar science, positioning the Azores as a strategic scientific hub, and fostering stronger connections between science, technology, and society.
