Networking Friday with iAtlantic
An afternoon with iAtlantic: Showcasing our Southwest Atlantic Work, from Ocean Circulation to Food Security
On May 24th, 2024, from 1:00-3:00 UTC, join five iAtlantic scientists from across the world to learn about the research programme’s work in the Southwest Atlantic, from ocean circulation to tropicalisation to food security and the impact of marine heatwaves.
iAtlantic has delivered knowledge that is critical for responsible and sustainable management of Atlantic Ocean resources in an era of unprecedented global change. Recently concluded, this ambitious project involved marine scientists from countries bordering the north and south Atlantic Ocean, seeking to determine the resilience of deep-sea animals – and their habitats – to threats such as temperature rise, pollution and human activities.
iAtlantic undertook an ocean-wide approach to understanding the factors that control the distribution, stability and vulnerability of deep-sea ecosystems. Work spanned the full scale of the Atlantic basin, from the tip of Argentina in the south to Iceland in the north, and from the east coasts of USA and Brazil to the western margins of Europe and Africa. Central to the project’s success was the international collaboration between scientists throughout the Atlantic region, with sharing of expertise, equipment, infrastructure, data and personnel placed at the forefront of iAtlantic’s approach.
For a comprehensive overview of iAtlantic’s results and achievements, take a look at our Research Highlights publication (pdf).

Speakers
Murray Roberts
Introduction to iAtlantic
Murray Roberts is Professor of Applied Marine Biology & Ecology in the School of Geosciences at the University of Edinburgh where he moved in October 2016. Before this he was Professor of Marine Biology and Director of the Centre for Marine Biodiversity & Biotechnology at Heriot-Watt University. He studied Biology at the University of York before a PhD at the University of Glasgow examining nitrogen cycling in the Anemonia viridis symbiosis. Since 1997 his work on cold-water corals and deep-sea biology has taken him to sites off the UK, Norway, Ireland and the SE United States. Murray is senior author of the ‘Cold-water Corals’ (Cambridge University Press), a contributing author to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 5th Assessment Report and co-lead editor of a 2014 United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity report on ocean acidification. He is Adjunct Faculty at the University of North Carolina Wilmington where he was a Marie Curie Fellow 2007-09. From 2012-15 he co-ordinated Heriot-Watt University’s role in the Lyell Centre for Earth and Marine Science and Technology. The £30M Lyell Centre is a collaboration with the British Geological Survey and Heriot-Watt University that opened in 2016. He has led or participated in 23 offshore research cruises.
Jose Angel Perez
Impacts of Climate Shifts & Tropicalisation
Jose Angel Perez currently works at the School of Marine Science and Technology, University of Vale do Itajaí (Univali). Angel does research in Biological Oceanography, fisheries research and deep sea biology.
