The ICEBERG project has a two-fold aim: to comprehensively assess sources, types, distributions, and impacts of pollution in combination with chronic climate-induced stressors on ecosystems and communities in the European Arctic’s land-ocean continuum using a One Health approach, and to develop strategies for enhancing community-led resilience, as well as pollution-control governance.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Atlantic International Research Centre will contribute towards risk assessment and local resilience strategies for ecosystems and communities through its expertise in an integrative approach to space, climate, and ocean, particularly in the field of marine litter mapping. The project objective is to evaluate the effects of pollution and climate change on coastal and marine ecosystems, as well as food webs, and their subsequent impact on local communities. The aim being to supply relevant data for policy formulation and to alleviate the adverse consequences of pollution and climate change. The AIR Centre will contribute to policy recommendations related to Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) by scrutinizing existing governance approaches, identifying their challenges and shortcomings, and facilitating effective science-based pollution-control governance. The AIR Centre will additionally disseminate policy recommendations from ICEBERG, aiming to restore Arctic marine and coastal areas, to provide valuable insights for the Atlantic-Arctic Agora project and enhance overall resilience. Furthermore, the automated marine litter density mapping tool developed by ICEBERG can contribute to the effectiveness of marine restoration tools in the Arctic Atlantic basin. The policy recommendations formulated within the ICEBERG framework will be directed towards the EU Blue Mission, “Restore our Oceans” via the AIR Centre BlueMission Atlantic & Arctic Coordination and Support Action. The overall AIR Centre role will be to disseminate knowledge, policy recommendations, lessons learned and promote cooperation via its networked, long-term consultation and dialog platform uniting governments, multi-lateral organizations, academia and industry to work together with civil society to tackle marine issues in the Atlantic region.
