The Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the Portuguese Polar Program (PROPOLAR), the European Polar Board (EPB) and the Atlantic International Research Centre (AIR Centre) opened a call for PhD fellowships topics on “Preservation and Restoration of Polar Marine and Coastal Ecosystems and Biodiversity” to award 5 PhD fellowships in line with the Atlantic & Arctic Lighthouse of the EU Mission Restore our Oceans and Waters by 2030. These 4-year fellowships are funded by FCT and will follow FCT’s PhD fellowships Call Guidelines here.

This announcement is to receive proposals from aspiring SUPERVISORS aiming at framing a PhD student under the topic of the call within their research team. The PhD degree must be awarded by a Portuguese University. Each supervisor can submit one proposal for a PhD dissertation topic. Each proposal must include a policy component, within which students will conduct a 3 to 12 months internship at the European Polar Board (EPB). The proposals may include additional national or international co-host institutions.

Proposals will be evaluated by a panel implemented by the European Polar Board and evaluated according to logistic feasibility and scientific merit. The deadline for proposal submission is 31st January 2023.

  • Profile of the PhD candidate (500 characters):
  • Synthesis of the project (3000 characters):
  • Logistics (500 characters) (Describe how the logistics will be supported; note that logistics need to be guaranteed by the host institution, and that proposals without logistics requirements are also accepted).
