Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON) Side Event
Side-event of the All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance 2022 Forum
Scientific Event – Brasília, Brazil | 3rd June 2022
Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON): Coordinating marine life observations to support conservation, restoration, and equitable sustainable development | 3rd June 2022, 9:30-11:00 AM BRT.
At the MBON side event on June 3rd will review co-design strategies conducted under the MBON including the development of the MBON Pole to Pole framework for local observations of marine life and biodiversity using a basin-scale framework for interoperability, building on regional elements of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and guidelines for data flow developed by the Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS) and the Ocean Best Practices System (OBPS). The side event will also consider monitoring and management projects and programs in order to develop indicators and support decision-making about marine ecosystem services and nature-based solutions for climate change mitigation. The goal is to better manage ocean uses and satisfy national reporting requirements for targets of Sustainable Development Goals, the post-2020 Convention on Biological Diversity, and other national and international frameworks. This is an opportunity to expand marine life understanding in the Atlantic Basin, and to jointly contribute to the Marine Life 2030 Programme of the Ocean Decade.
