AIR Centre showcases satellite-based ocean monitoring in Pico

The IV Encontro de Ciência e Tecnologia is taking place in Lajes do Pico, Azores, from April 20 to 24, bringing together students, educators, researchers, and the wider community for a week dedicated to science and technology. The AIR Centre is participating in this year’s edition, contributing to the programme with research on space-based applications for ocean monitoring. On the opening day, researcher Joaquim Melo, from the AIR Centre’s Space Systems and Applications programme, shared his work on detecting cetaceans using satellite imagery. His presentation showed how Earth observation technologies can support marine monitoring and conservation, offering new ways to study and protect ocean biodiversity in remote regions such as the Azores. This year, the programme brings together a wide range of speakers and themes, reflecting the diversity of today’s scientific landscape. Topics include maritime archaeology, breast cancer research, nutrition and cancer prevention, and adolescent brain function, creating opportunities for meaningful exchanges across different fields. Throughout the week, students, teachers, and the general public are invited to join talks, workshops, training sessions, and hands‑on activities focused on science and technology. The event also offers accredited training in programming and robotics, artificial intelligence, and the geological landscapes of the Azores, strengthening its educational dimension. Guided by the motto “Science and technology are waiting for you”, the meeting continues to establish itself as a key moment for science communication on Pico Island, encouraging curiosity, learning, and community engagement, especially among younger generations.
