Tracing value chains and using fisher’s knowledge to understand the status of commercial fisheries stocks in the Azores

Abstract
Developing collaborative fisheries research is one way that small-scale fisheries such as the Azores might advance toward more successful management by incorporating stakeholder and scientific information into more holistic assessment procedures. In this context, the purpose of this thesis is to characterize the structure and dynamics of the Azorean fisheries sector, propose a framework for using fishers’ knowledge as semi-quantitative indicators that can assess fishery status in data-limited scenarios, and evaluate the socioeconomic benefits generated by the Azorean fishery, based on a socio-economic modeling approach using the value chain.
