Development of aquaculture technology for the Azorean limpet species: life cycle, culture systems and feeding
Scholarship Summary (Abstract)
the candidate has the opportunity to develop all stages of the production cycle of lapa brava or mansa and can focus on several topics:
• Reproduction (artificial or induced, stimulation of gonad development, gamete concentration, fertilization times, effects of feeding on gamete quality, selection of breeders and effects on juvenile development and growth, etc.)
• Larval development, survival and optimization of cultivation techniques;
• Settlement in the laboratory and in nature (relationship with breeders, substrates and factors that increase survival);
• Post larval development (relationship with breeders, nutritional needs, diets, etc.);
• Nutritional needs of limpets: cultivation of micro and macroalgae in formulating diets to sustain their production cycle from nesting to adulthood.
Profile of the desired candidates for the proposed scholarship
Candidates should preferably have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Aquaculture and some experience in the management of invertebrate culture.
Name of the Supervisor(s)
According to the rules of the University of the Azores (which will be the one who will award the degree) one of the supervisors must have a permanent link to the University. Scholarships can be mixed.
