On September 23, 2024, the AIR Centre expanded its reach in the Atlantic region by welcoming the Republic of Peru and the Democratic Republic of São Tomé e Principe as associate members.
Through the
National Council for Science, Technology and Technological Innovation of Peru (CONCYTEC) and the Embassy of Peru in Lisbon, the Republic of Peru expressed its interest in joining the AIR Centre’s network. CONCYTEC highlighted that “the AIR Centre’s identified missions are aligned with Peruvian priorities for the sustainable management of natural resources, ocean and Earth observation”. They also emphasized CONCYTEC’s commitment to “active cooperation with the AIR Centre”, supporting multilateral partnerships.
Represented by its Ministry of Education, Culture and Sciences, São Tomé and Príncipe also expressed its interest to embrace the AIR Centre network. According to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sciences, “the collaboration in research projects and technological development in the area of atmospheric, marine, environmental sciences, and new technologies”, will help promote scientific and technological advances that will benefit São Tomé and Príncipe's academic and scientific community, as well as society in general.
The expansion of the
AIR Centre’s international network now includes
19 participating countries and regions, spanning four continents: Mainland Portugal, Autonomous Region of the Azores, Amazonia, Angola, Bahia, Cabo Verde, Ceara, Colombia, France, Guatemala, Morocco, Nigeria, Namibia, Peru, Rio de Janeiro, São Tomé and Príncipe, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom.
The AIR Centre continues to build bridges between countries in the Atlantic region, promoting the share of knowledge, enhancing the sustainable development and focusing on an agenda of regional and local cooperation.
