Conference in Lisbon to explore new developments in ocean observation

On 26 November 2026, the Portuguese Ocean Decade Committee and the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, in partnership with the AIR Centre, will bring together researchers and experts in ocean science for the conference New Trends in Multidisciplinary Ocean Observation, hosted at the Lisbon Academy of Sciences in Lisbon.

The event will focus on new tools and approaches that are helping improve the way the Ocean is observed and understood, particularly across the Atlantic. Discussions will cover a range of technologies already transforming ocean monitoring, including low-cost sensors, biogeochemical ARGO floats, remote sensing systems, autonomous vehicles, and SMART submarine cables.

Bringing together scientists from different disciplines, the conference will provide a platform to exchange knowledge on emerging observation methods and the data needed to better understand ocean processes and support decision-making.

The event contributes to the objectives of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, particularly efforts to strengthen global ocean observing systems and expand access to knowledge, technology, and skills. It also supports the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation

Participation is free. Register your attendance here.

Coastal research in Atlantic Africa falls short as erosion and coastal populations grow

calendar_today November 3, 2026

A new study published in the Journal of Coastal Conservation shows that scientific knowledge on coastal evolution along the Atlantic coast of Africa remains scarce and unevenly distributed. This gap comes as the continent faces ongoing coastal erosion and rapid population growth in its coastal zones.
