Networking Friday: Charting the bio- and geosphere with UPFLOW
Imaging deep mantle flow is essential for understanding global mantle dynamics and linking Earth’s interior to the surface. However, plume-like upwellings rising from the deep mantle remain poorly understood.
The ERC-funded UPFLOW project is offering new perspectives on this challenge through the largest ocean-bottom seismic experiment ever conducted in the Atlantic. Focused on the Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands region, the project is revealing previously undetected mantle structures and delivering important advances in our understanding of deep Earth processes.
Beyond breakthroughs in geophysics, the data collected are also enabling unexpected interdisciplinary research, including in marine biology and oceanography.
Led by a collaboration of 11 institutions across five countries (UK, Portugal, Germany, Ireland and Spain), and supported by Portugal’s IPMA research vessel Mário Ruivo, UPFLOW is not only expanding the frontiers of geoscience but also showcasing the power of international cooperation in addressing some of Earth’s most complex scientific questions.
Join us to dive into the deep Earth from the bottom of the Atlantic!
Program (PM/UTC):
01:00 -01:05 – Introduction
01:05-01:55 – Presentation by Ana Ferreira
01:55-02:15 – Q&A
Speakers

Ana Ferreira
University College London, UK
Prof. Ana Ferreira is Professor of Seismology at the department of Earth Sciences, University College London. She is internationally known for pioneering methods to image earthquake sources and Earth’s interior and for leading big seismic data analyses. She has supervised 13 PhD students to completion and 11 postdocs, all of whom have progressed to good jobs in academia, industry and government. She has extensive experience leading international and diverse teams, including over 22 researcher collaborators from 5 countries as part of her European Research Council UPFLOW project. Prof. Ferreira is strongly devoted into embedding equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) principles into academia, being co-chair of UCL Earth Sciences’ EDI committee and leading several initiatives to promote inclusion in geosciences.![]()
Moderator

Rita Silva
University of the Azores, PT
Rita Silva, PhD in Geology (specialization in Volcanology), is an Assistant Researcher at the Institute of Volcanology and Risk Assessment of the University of the Azores.
She has participated in the monitoring of multiple seismic crises in the Azores and in international simulation exercises, such as MESIMEX in Naples. She has collaborated in several national and European projects (STorM, EUROVOLC, VOLRISKMAC, among others), serving as the Principal Investigator (PI) for the CIVISA partner in the VOLRISKMAC project.
Her research focuses on Volcanic Seismology, particularly on the study of seismicity in volcanic areas, with an emphasis on seismic swarms in the central region of São Miguel Island, addressing topics such as statistical analysis of seismicity, relocation of seismic crises, and stress tensor inversion.
We will continue with the Networking Fridays during the next months. More information about future sessions as well as presentations and videos from previous sessions can be found here.
