AIR Centre to present Satellite Whale Monitoring at NEREUS Symposium

The AIR Centre will showcase its latest work on satellite-based whale monitoring at the 4th European Symposium by NEREUS Regions, taking place on October 2–3, 2025, in Ponta Delgada, Azores.

André Valente, Head of AIR Centre’s Space Systems & Applications, will present “Whale Detection from Space in Support of Marine Protection and the Blue Economy.” His presentation will delve into innovative methodologies for monitoring marine mammal populations using satellite-based remote sensing, a crucial advancement for marine conservation efforts. The Azores, renowned for their rich marine biodiversity, provide the perfect setting for discussions on integrating space-based technologies into marine protection strategies.

Hosted at Teatro Micaelense, this year’s symposium focuses on “New Space for Multiple Challenges: Resilience & Sustainability.” It will gather local authorities, researchers, and stakeholders to examine how space technologies can support resilience and sustainability in areas such as civil protection, the blue economy, and defense.
Organized by NEREUS (Network of European Regions Using Space Technologies), the event aims to foster dialogue among European regions on the strategic use of space data to tackle regional and local challenges.
