Escola de Sagres Supercomputer enhances disaster prediction through transatlantic cloud network

The Instituto Politécnico da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (IPRJ-UERJ) has launched a powerful supercomputer – “Escola de Sagres” – capable of predicting catastrophic events like floods and developing mitigation strategies.

The project is one component of the Atlantic Cloud, an innovative transatlantic computational network created by the AIR Centre’s associates. Developed collaboratively by these research institutions, this supercomputing network leverages a unique infrastructure to enable resource sharing and advanced computational capabilities.

For Elizabeth Macedo, Pro-Rector of Postgraduate and Research at UERJ, this partnership enables a much more consistent oceanographic and atmospheric research in the Atlantic region. She also emphasized the computational possibilities for developing more comprehensive environmental modeling.

The Escola de Sagres will support diverse research projects, including computational modeling, engineering applications, and advanced artificial intelligence research. Its primary function extends to predicting flood locations and developing comprehensive mitigation strategies.
