In Memoriam: Professor Thierry Chopin
It is with profound sadness that we receive the news of the passing of Professor Thierry Chopin on Thursday, July 18. Professor Chopin was a pioneering force in the field of aquaculture, renowned for his groundbreaking work on Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA).
Throughout his distinguished career, Professor Chopin made significant contributions to the sustainable development of aquaculture. His innovative research in IMTA, which involves the cultivation of multiple, complementary species such as salmon, mussels, and seaweed, transformed traditional aquaculture practices. This approach not only enhanced environmental sustainability but also improved economic viability by creating balanced ecosystems that mimic natural interactions.
Professor Chopin’s passion for marine biology and his relentless pursuit of sustainability in aquaculture were evident in his extensive work and numerous publications. His efforts earned him international recognition and respect, establishing him as a leading authority in the field. His work demonstrated how integrating species that feed at different trophic levels can mitigate environmental impacts and optimise resource use.
In addition to his scientific achievements, Professor Chopin was a beloved educator and mentor. He inspired countless students and colleagues with his dedication, knowledge, and vision for a more sustainable future. His legacy will continue to influence the field of aquaculture for generations to come.
We had the distinct pleasure of collaborating with him on the ASTRAL project and enjoyed a memorable Networking Friday with him.
He always expressed a desire to visit the Azores, and this wish came true when he traveled to Terceira Island as a guest speaker at the last edition of the ‘Atlantic Innovation Week’ in April 2023, where he discussed the ‘Turquoise Economy’. He was so thrilled to stay in a Turquoise room hotel and humorously concluded his presentation with a picture of his hotel room. Typical of Thierry’s wit and sense of humour.
As we remember Professor Chopin, we celebrate his contributions to science and his unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship. His innovative spirit and dedication to sustainable aquaculture will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
Au revoir, Thierry!
