On 18 June, AIR Centre researchers Adriano Lima, Joana Soares, and Mariana Ávila took part in the Participatory Assembly of Terceira Island. Held at the University of the Azores in Angra do Heroísmo, the event was part of the BioMUST4All project – Experienciar a Biodiversidade nos Açores de Forma Inovadora e Inclusiva.

BioMUST4All aims to develop five pilot biodiversity experiences in the Azores, designed according to principles of inclusion and universal accessibility. To support this process, the project team identified a set of potential locations based on scientific criteria related to biodiversity, accessibility, safety, and educational, social, and tourism value. The Participatory Assembly brought together representatives from different sectors of Azorean society to discuss these proposals and contribute to the final selection of the pilots.

More than a consultation exercise, the Assembly worked as a space for collective decision‑making, where participants directly influenced the project’s direction and the solutions to be implemented. The final selection will combine the preferences expressed during the Assembly with the practical feasibility of each proposal, including the partnerships and support that can be mobilised around the chosen initiatives.

The AIR Centre’s participation reflects its commitment to community engagement and to inclusive approaches to biodiversity science in the Azores, contributing to a process that places the knowledge and perspectives of local stakeholders at the heart of research and innovation.
