SATSDIFACTION – Satellite Data for regional Spatial Data Infrastructures
The integration of satellite data in local and regional Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs) holds great strategic potential to support evidence-based governance at sub-national level. Satellite-derived knowledge can play a transformative role in improving territorial and environmental management, optimising the use of natural resources, and enabling more effective public policies and services for citizens.
Despite this potential, the uptake of satellite data and services by local and regional administrations remains limited, largely due to gaps in technical competences and insufficient awareness among political decision-makers.
Project Description
The SATSDIFACTION project aims to address this challenge by promoting the use of satellite data in regional SDIs to improve the performance of regional policy instruments across a range of fields. Through peer exchange and collaborative learning among regional stakeholders, the project works to strengthen governance at local and regional level, supporting partners in becoming more efficient, effective, and accountable.
The Autonomous Region of the Azores is participating as a consortium partner, using the Azorean Energy Strategy 2030 (EAE2030) and the associated SOLENERGE incentive scheme as a demonstration case. With the expected growth in photovoltaic (PV) installations driven by SOLENERGE, satellite data represents a key asset for monitoring progress toward EAE2030 targets. In this context, two satellite-based applications are being developed: mapping of existing PV systems, and mapping of solar potential. Both applications will be integrated into a pilot prototype within the Azores Spatial Data Infrastructure (IDE.A), demonstrating how satellite data can support decision-making and evidence-based governance at regional level.
AIR Centre contributes to the project by providing specialised technical expertise, supporting the identification of good practices among consortium stakeholders, guiding the implementation of the pilot prototype, and developing a forward-looking plan for its evolution and the integration of new functionalities.
